Panel Discussion

Tonight was by far my favorite class thus far.  It was great to get to hear so many different perspectives and gain insight into the lives of people who are deaf.  I learned so much more from just listening to their stories than I ever could from a textbook.  I felt that their responses were genuine and very helpful as a future educator.  I wish we had been given more time with them!  Perhaps the next time this activity occurs, the class could vote on the questions they would like to be asked during the panel so that all students would have a say in the discussion... Just an idea! :)

  1. This was my favorite class as well (partly because we finally got out of the hot, cramped classroom) but also because they were excited to talk to us about their experiences in life, just as much as we were excited to hear about it. Its always great when you hear about certain things first-hand rather than having to read about it in a textbook. They were hilarious which made it even more intriguing to see their personalities mesh so well. I really do see what people mean now when they say Deaf people have a natural bond.

  2. I completely agree! The variety of perspectives was awesome. Its interesting how so many can have similar experiences and backgrounds, yet they choose to allow those experiences to influence their choices in different ways. Sometimes it isn't the specific experience, but how they manage the experience to get the outcome they want.

  3. Cathy does this with all of her classes I believe. Last semester she had Jena and her husband. It was really nice to be able to talk to them and see their perspectives of everything.
