Haptics

WOW! i love Haptics-is any form of nonverbal communication involving touch. for example if someone is blind the SSP would sit behind them and use touch to describe the environment. at the retreat when it was comedy hour the blind could hear but not see reaction so the SSP hap tics user would draw things like a smile of a frown on the blind individuals back. Cool right?!

  1. Haptics is a great thing! I tried it on one of my hearing friends and they thought it was great! they could understand their surroundings by the picture on their back. This new approach is great!

  2. Haptics was amazing. I wanna see if we can get Lawrence to bring a haptics person here for 1 day to teach an all day workshop.

  3. I think I have seen this way of signing before. In my first two ASL classes at a different college, two students were confined to wheelchairs and had some sort of mental and physical disability. They had a person sit in front of them and do signs in their hands so they were learning the language. Even if this is not Haptics, it's still pretty cool.

  4. Just yesterday, I called a past mentor and expressed how amazing Haptics was and was curious to hear if she knew about it or not.... She didnt and I told her everything I knew about it! SHe is a certified, experienced interpreter, so this made me feel super official and impacting on the spread of this method! Whoa to Haptics!

  5. A workshop on Haptics??? That is a fantastic idea! Haptics was fascinating enough to me to consider more involvement with the deaf/blind community, not just the deaf. It was waaaaaayyy cool!
