Test Questions - Help?

Ok...I would like your input before the FINAL EXAM.

As I have graded your tests I have noticed a repeated issue of students not reading carefully the QUESTION.  How can I better assist/support you with this part of the assessment?

The final will be comprehensive.  It will expect you to synthesize information from the course and display your understanding from all chapters, class discussion as well as your background knowledge.

If it says list, you will have to list or you will not get full credit.

If it says to provide a scenario, you will not be given credit for explaining related information about the topic.  You need to describe the scenario.

If the question asks about a child who is deaf and uses ASL you must address how he is using ASL and communicating in the given situation.  It is not asking you to demonstrate your knowledge about the importance of the Deaf Community.  I realize there is a connection and how one impacts the other.

I am interested in having you review the questions from the previous tests and letting me know if they are unclear or how I might state them in a way that helps you focus more specifically on the content that is being sought.  The purpose of the final is for you to demonstrate your NEW learning from class, the text and your experiences.

  1. While reading over questions from the previous tests, I did see a few that I thought were vague on what information you wanted us to provide or what kind of explanations you wanted. As you have said numerous times in class, students (myself included) have been taught in recent years to just regurgitate information. As a result of this, I feel like if you are looking for a specific answer or explanation, there should be strict instructions as to what you're looking for. The majority of us are so often used to just typing back everything we know about a subject that we neglect to answer what you are really asking. I know I am guilty of this at times.
I hope this feedback helps! I know I am going to be studying vigorously for the final!

  2. I agree with emily, I also thought some of the questions were vague or confusing in general. I also felt as if I supplied you with a lot of the same information or that it all related to each other. I did, however, like that about the tests because I had to think about the same information from many different aspects when trying to answer all the different types of questions.

  3. These answers help, ladies. I've reviewed the questions on Test 3, especially. I agree. The questions need to more clear. I'm going to have a colleague or two review my questions for the final. We will also be reviewing the types of words/tasks that will be used on some of the questions through our activities in class. This will allow us to discuss expectations and provide modeling. It also fits with the chapters relative to education of the deaf.

I appreciate any additional feedback. Feel free to be specific about questions, if you wish. It may be similar or different from questions I have in mind where after reflection I'm not pleased with the questions. I may even share how I'd reword these questions to better prepare you for the types of questions you can expect on a comprehensive final.

  4. I feel like the questions on Test 3 were less specific about what exactly you were looking for. I know my first two tests I did really well on and I understood exactly what the questions were asking. This past test however I seemed to misinterpret a lot about what you wanted in our answers. This definitely could've just been my misinterpretation, however I feel like the first two tests were really well worded so that there was no confusion.

  5. I feel the same way, the questions were vague on the last test. I would answer a question that said explain and I felt like I had explained what was asked of me and then in the feedback there was a lot of information you were looking for that I felt like I didn't need to put into my answer because to me I had explained what was asked. If there would have been more instructions as to what specific answer you were looking for I feel I would have done much better on the test.

  6. I agree as well. There were some questions that were extremely vague while other one you specified exactly what you wanted to hear from us.

  7. I felt that the Test #3 did take more time because I was being careful to cover exactly what the question asked. However, if I did notice that something was not so specific I just tried to relate the content to the course materials we have discussed in class...
Thanks for taking the time to ask us our input.

  8. From the previous test I feel that a lot of questions were very vague or not really talked about in class.

  9. I did struggle some with trying to figure out exactly what you were looking for on the last test. Sometimes it does take us thinking about a question for a moment and the exact wording. Since we are allowed to talk to others about the test and work with others as long as we write our own answers, then I definitely encourage people to take the opportunity since it's allowed. I print off and discuss the questions with others and the meaning behind them and so far that's helped me have a better understanding.

  10. I feel like the questions on the final should be more geared towards class discussions

    1. I agree, I feel like we gain so much real life knowledge and I honestly enjoy that so much more than reading. I do understand the use of a book though.
