Disability

Alright I am not trying to stir up controversy or start any fights, but I think this needs to be addressed. Why is disability a bad word? In all my ASL classes and in this one everyone is all like "oh no deaf people are not disabled!" Alright...that's your opinion, but why would it be a negative thing in the first place?? I have a disability, I am not ashamed or afraid to say I do. It is a part of who I am as a person. Have a tried to correct my hearing loss? Yes, I have many times, but disability is not a negative thing. It doesn't have to be anyway. So why run from the word? Why not just change people's attitudes about the word? Or you all can tell me why it is such a bad word or a bad thing to identify as. Again I'm not trying to start a fight, but seriously if we are to higher educate ourselves shouldn't we think about why disability has to seem like such a bad thing? Why we run from it instead of change it. Any thoughts? Feel free to disagree or chew me out even, but please don't run from the question. Thanks.

  1. Rebekah i have to say i wonder the same thing at many times. i feel as though the word disabilities is not bad. i think the reason people who are Deaf dont want to label that is because of the fact that they are completely able-body they just dont have hearing. so they dont see it as a disability. I have auditory processing disorder which makes it really hard to me to hear when there is any background noises (including the fans in the classroom) i can hear just fine but because of the noises i hear different things like when someone says there i may hear hair here air. which causes problems. i mention this because i could see where they dont call being Deaf as a disability.

  2. I agree with Chelsea, the word disability can be viewed as a negative term by many people. It also gives off the view that a person is unable to do something either physically or mentally.

  3. I've wondered the same thing from time to time but I think it has something more to do with they don't think they're broken and that nothing is wrong with them. To Deaf people the word disability means they wish they had their hearing back.

  5. I think the main thing that bothers individuals who are called "disabled" is that it means they are unable to perform *something*. Most of the time, this isn't true. They are ABLE to so something, but it may just be in a different way than the majority of others.
