Today's Meet 02-25-13

SED 337 (0225)

so the test is open next monday? right?

I think so.

I think so

I would prefer having access to test material on my own, rather than through others.

Cheyenne, help me understand - how do you not have access to test material on your own?

Do we still have to do the case study or is that gone because of the situation with the schools?

It's good to discuss the questions in a group setting so we may prepare for our next assessment.

I will know more about the site visit after I get the email from Debbie. I will email everyone by Weds with update on it and Case Study

You mentioned taking notes while in our groups due to those questions showing up on our test.

question 1) identifying a problem so you can address it, knowing what your options are.

What were the types again?

Types of tests Otoacoustic emissions OAE

Auditory Brainstem Response

High risk registry

AUTOMATED AUDITORY BRAINSTEM RESPONSE (AABR) and TRANSIENT EVOKED OTOACOUSTIC EMISSIONS (TEOAE)

Sorry caps

Thanks

benefits: the sooner you know, the sooner you can prepare the child to be successful.

How often do they check that if there are "risk factors" or do they go one and done?

Look up when universal screening was mandated into law.

Pg 230 for later

And Ty Joe

Joe says "you are welcome"

das good ya. family ya

Home visits? Please expand?

sometime professionals will come to the house to help. Example headstart has a program where they do this

What is the goal of the visit?

help discuss options.

Interesting. Ty.

where to get help things along that as well

i think it is also interesting to not that families have to allow support which is a huge consideration: letting someone else tell you how t

Is this mandatory or an elective service?

elective services.

Ty

Fayette Mall this friday 6:30-9 a variety of Deaf, Hearing,CODA, etc will be there relaxing and socializing

np

School based: child & Parent --> professional Home based: professional --> child & parent

Interesting

so perhaps it would be good to ask some of those folks at the Mall what their experience was like when they were little concerning these typ

es of interventions

I wonder when these particular services became available.

if i remember correctly it is as soon as you know
I mean 5 yrs ago, 10, 15, 20?

ah that idk

page 240 perhaps gives some insight into that question about availability...it was private for a while

Since some of the laws are more recent, I'm just curious how recent the services are.

Pg 233 for later about culture

Decisions: Hearing assistant technology, communication methods, Finances, Location, will one person stay home and not work?

What modifications may need to be made to the home, as well.

Decisions: support system, getting the child on an IEP, relocating, type of school (mainstream, residential school, day school)

Decisions: possibly Learning ASL, testing for other things Deafness can be a symptom of.

why does this info not surprise us about Jackie??? LOL ;)

LOL

ISD - IL. School for the Deaf

I've seen mature 7 yr olds and immature 40 yr olds

All very good points ppl that spoke up. Thank you.

I think the decisions depend on the child. If the child is Deaf+ I doubt the decisions would be the same.

Deaf+. I agree.

Like most decisions in life: 1/2 the people in the room agree with you and the other 1/2 do not....do what works best for YOUR family and ch

Agreed

ild...either way you live with the decision

Other decisions specifically for parents: do you need counseling? where will you get your support? How will you work with finances?

Parenting = education? Touchy stuff. That's a bigger, overarching question

Parenting itself is too touchy. People have strong opinions.

But parenting and education overlap and as "professionals" we should probably have a good grip on boundaries

it's rough and a gray area, but one you have to address in some way.

Early intervention = specifically addresses an issue; Preschool = not quite public, but more general... right?

I dunno, was confused

This is to the counseling comments. Counseling is based on you. Some people see as negative and others think it positive. From experience

it can help. It's a great support system for people who may feel that they did something wrong and that's why they have a deaf child, etc.

I meant just counseling in general.

that's Montesorri for anyone who wants to look it up.

early intervention = pragmatics & basic social interaction.

Harmony Day School, A Montessori Program is the school I work for in Lexington, if you want to read about that kind of school
Does anyone know if the IEP is created in preschool? Or is it developed later

Sidenote: is preschool required by the state? at what age does mandatory school start?

Our program is from 18 months -6 years.

IEP's are required for students in many preschool programs, that's how they get in

Lauren, they can start on the referral process for the IEP's in preschool/kindergarden but many times the true interventions wont begin unti

l kindergarten

Preschool is not required (if I remember correctly), you must start school at kindergarten, which is around age 5

Thanks
