Today's Meet 02-04-13

SED337

Good evening!
Its how you identify yourself

Hearing impaired is a negative label

Deaf shows pride in their culture

I actually do have a hearing loss. I wear a hearing aid.

Since connotations come with every word, we have to be careful how we describe people.

If you use a term the individual does not, you could offend someone.

I have auditory Processing Disorder which to some is considered a hearing loss as well

terms/labels helps the world comprehend

Hearing impaired and deafness can have a cultural stigma bc of the pathological definitions associated with them

Unfortunately sometimes terms are used more as labels instead of identifying factors
But how do you approach them to see what term they use...

I've heard people say "just ask"

I feel as tho Hard of hearing is the safest bet

This country is sometimes obsessed with categorizing people. Most of the time the bottom line reason is for funding, or lack of....

You wouldn't hurt my feelings to call me hard of hearing

Deaf people tend to be blunt and would probably appreciate you asking what their identity preference is.

I agree

Someone else might not agree with hoh. We are all different.

I think that would be best. Great comment,
Anna.

sound is not neg??

I would lean more towards whatever is the most empowering to that individual. I've never seen anyone respond negatively to that.

Sound, Cheyenne?

i agree with matching that which is most empowering to the individual.

Dan: No, I was referring to HH and Deaf

if the individual is empowered by the term the we respect that

I think its more encourage than empower. To show support and not look down upon others.

you can give respect

I agree with you Emily

DEAF PRIDE, HAVE YOU?

The Deaf Community individuals tend to use Deaf and deaf to categorize each other..

Good point Renee

Could it be related to their own pride in being deaf?

I feel as though some people turn Deaf pride into Deaf prejudice. Thoughts??

I think it could - all people *can* be prejudiced.

Good point Renee and Julie.

What was the deal with sound? Sound is neutral.

What public law was it

PL 94-142

94142?

PL94-142

Ty

Thanks!

What about those with cochlears? I've heard some in the Deaf community aren't supportive of it. Curious how they may identify themselves

The section for PL 94-142 starts on page 19

As far as sound, I'm not sure if this is what you meant but before I haw told a Deaf person that had "had never heard of" something...I'd th

Great question kayla

Is that a bad thing to say since it refers to hearing?

Jordan - nope. Most d/Deaf use the term "heard of" to say the same concept.

Well, maybe "know of"

Ok good...I don't want offend anyone, but just didn't know how else to say it. Thanks!

it refers to taking in information... it doesn't always mean you "hear" it.

I once had a professor that said facts were not real....at all

Thaaat's a philosophical problem...

Facts are sometimes only the popular belief. True. World flat and all that.

Interesting, shocking, hard to believe...

The other law I couldn't remember the number was 101-476
Did i read that correctly that he got punched in the face?

Seriously...

But that punch changed his entire mindset and pushed him forward......

8th paragraph up

Punches to the face: moving us forward since 1797

lol Priceless

Haha!

Does "profoundly" deaf mean "entirely" deaf? Or what does that mean...

Profound is a hearing loss over 90 dB

I think so

Yes

I've heard hot oil is one liquid that people used on deaf.

my favorite "cure": taking children in airplane rides and flipping in air would bring hearing back.

definition of Profoundly is "intensely"

loss over 90 db aka...Deaf

what do you mean flipping in air?

Rolling the plane I believe

Uncle Clerc... awesome

flipping the plane in loops. something about the pressure from that helped to "bring back hearing" from "Through Deaf Eyes" video in library

Thats crazy

agreed haha

Does anyone know if the school is still in France? Can you visit?

Sounds very safe...

I'm super nun. Not an angry nun!!

Thats awesome

way to go Super nun!

Thanks :)

They solomely swore they were up to no good.....
is it Gall-ah-det or Gall-you-det?!

the first way

Glad we covered that.

AMEN Joe!

maybe no one knows...

haha, just curious

Mischief managed
Jackie! You made my night!

Uh oh

Butterfly Effect

Can we have a field trip to Gallaudet?

True biz. Jacobs Hall is cool

second

Ah yes. 80's theme music during introductions. =)

I WISH we could take a field trip to Gally

Spring Break!

80's music because this is a HISTORY lesson :-)

OVERHEAD!!!!! Did he know about computers??

DEAF still EAR-CLOSED in '89.

Interesting Signs

The Deaf Academic Bowl is taking place at Gally during EKU's Spring break.. It would be an awesome experience ;)

were we suppose to do something with these sticky notes?

It's interesting the effect simcom has on the quality of communication of both Lang.

Was the man speaking using ASL or English sign?

Yes. I want the interesting fact ones.

English

Thanks Dan

:-) I think I'll sign the rest of the class - like I did for 11 years in the classroom!

Thats a small class

If they are educating them why did they still call them deaf and dumb?

How many schools for the Deaf are there total in America?

Do it!

I wonder if their view of "dumb" when the school was named is what we think of it now..

Good question Emily.

I'm gonna punch that announcer in the face if he says deaf and dumb one more time!

Dumb = mute

I don't think English used the term "dumb" to mean "stupid" until later.

I believe "dumb" referred to lack of speaking, not intelligence.

dumb can be used more as not able to speak

Good questions.

True Jackie. Was used that way. I wonder when dumb began to mean stupid.

Does anyone know if they are still fighting to keep there school?

so dumb was related strictly to speech?

Unfortunately, IDS is STILL fighting to keep the school open.

I think so. I mean, "asylum" used to mean "safe place"

Yes. Dumb meant unable to use speech

Ever heard the song pinball wizard? there is a line that deaf dumb and blind kid... it kinda shows the use of dumb as mute

Last year my ASL Club at John A. Logan College paid to have the Little Theater of the Deaf go to ISD to helo raise support & awareness for t

...for ISD

Thats really cool

EKU's library has several additions of the American annals of the Deaf

It was such a blessing they were willing to go (LTD doesn't usually go to IL). I think the event was a great success.

may not be the appropriat time but ASLA the American Sign Language org has a hearts and hands dance.

That is awesome that you got to be a part ofthat.

15th this friday 6-9pm king johnson ballroom

Is Mosaic Memoirs a general history thing, or a specifically deaf history thing?

we will have a Deaf dj :)

on the 15th.. thanks for reminding us, C.

Centre College - this weekend?

deaf history. its a part of deaf mosaic

*editions

How interesting, students teaching teachers to teach other students

Oral School - thoughts?

Is LSD still an Oral school?

Have a strong oral program

Was the police officer interpreting in that clip?

Handicap????

That's a really interesting take: everyone has handicaps

It takes two to make a thing go right......

"special needs"

It is my understanding that oral schools focus more on teaching speech and lip reading rather than all other classes such as math, history..

Anna-The police officer WAS interpreting the clip.

notice their signs... talk about the evolution of language.

We definitely all have our own struggles, regardless of what you call it..

I just say everyone is weird until you get to know them... then their even weird-er. It's awesome.

wow! Allice statue in hands

Love the clip of tactile signing.

E I like that!

But the man was using being deaf as a handicap- so is that what it means to have a handicap still? Or a "struggle"? Something to think about

Me too Dan. Can't wait to go on the Deaf-Blind retreat.

I have been to the Clark School for the Deaf, an oral school in North Hampton, Mass. They teach curriculum like public schools

Equality without sameness

So it is possible to disagree agreeably... great example.

I agree with TBC. At Logan, my teacher was a strict ASL user, so I have become quite attached to it, & admittedly, I cringe when I see "Eng

"English on the hands"

It is something I am trying to work on, though.

I think handicap is a word that was once used. Now we use different words that are more up to date and socially accepted.

After learning ASL it's annoying to see every single word signed or finger spelled

Why?

Maybe overwhelming is a better word... Not annoying... Sorry, that sounded way negative

If you dont mind me asking. Why is it over whelming

Maybe my comprehension is wrong. About the closest I can compare is ppl I know from other places that cringe at different accents.

I guess just not what I'm used to seeing, but to me when every single word is signed or spelled it starts to jumble.. I need to work on it

It's just not ASL, doesn't mean its wrong though

to me eku hasnt done well @ teaching asl lang. format..as a result i basically sign english which hasn't been prob. w/ Deaf ppl ive talked w

Should google "that deaf guy" sometime. Has a comic with "lip reading nightmares", funny.

WHat ASL you in Kayla?

201

You'll start learning about it more 201 and 202

Ok! I was wondering cause it gets aggravating sometimes lol

Testing testing, check check....amps up and guitars ready!!

nbjbp

It's good to discuss potential test questions in a group together...helps prepare!
