Leggo

medical perspective of deafness.

Treatable?

terminology as in very vocabulary based

Eugenics..

hearing aids

Cochlear implants

choice, communication, language, sound, family, deaf, hearing, hereditary, cochlear implants, causes, genetics

depends on who you ask... experiences shape opinions. sadly they aren't always positive

Some causes result in not only deafness

Today's society is constantly wanting to know the ins and outs of everything. Positive or negative..

I wonder if thats why when you have wind blow in your ear it tickles.

If the center for hearing aids is putting out a video, they should probably caption it...

it's important to me cause I have conductive hearing loss

also true

it's caused by the stapes bone and my eardrums not working properly

My husband is deaf in his left ear and was tested for Menieres disease in high school. He tested negative but its something we wonder about.

German measles during the mother's pregnancy

Sensorineural, Conductive, or Mixed Loss

genetics, disease, traumatic injury

earbuds...?

Just born that way

I feel these are all very important to understand so that we can give the child all of the options and let them choose what is best for
the

I think that different situations and backgrounds vary in preventative strategies... Thus, it depends on the person.

Context is a huge factor

cricket...

It all depends... the Holocaust "treated" deafness. You can "prevent deafness" by preventing a deaf child from being born w/ prebirth tests

It's not one person's right to decide for another. That always ends badly.

I second that!

you go Joe!
Amen

joe joe joe!

The science of improving a human population by controlled breeding to increase the occurrence of desirable heritable characteristics....

Eugenics is the applied science of the bio-social movement which advocates practices that improve the genetic composition of a population, u

I feel like it's Gods choice. Not the parents.

We cannot control everything, and IVF /makes people thinks they can control everything when it comes to offspring.
controlled breeding

usually a human population -- Wikipedia

Eugenics also is the sterilization and other unpleasantries of people "not perfect" in your eyes.

Couldn't agree more!!

It is selfishness... plain and simple.

Agree

Ditto

"Mini me" ha

Agree

can someone post the link to this video on the blog?

For whoever wants to watch it

later of course. ;)

Can we watch it, Cathy?

What's it called?

"My Son is Deaf Finally"

my son is finally deaf

Gracias

Diversity is beautiful... why would anyone want sameness?

Sameness is boring. Period.

I would be so bored if everyone was the same

I think many people are not exposed to enough differences to know that it's okay.

So true Emma loo! :)

Huh. Biggest cause of deafness is unknown.

Just born that way

You nailed it earlier.

THAT. ;)

Thank you;)

This is the part of the class that i was excited for!!

Can you imagine being deaf and waking up one day hearing things... I think that would be as scary as waking up and being deaf.

Maybe even more scary!! I'm sure sleeping would be difficult for awhile! So many noises

this girl

can you imagine if you were in traffic? WOW.

practically perfect in every way, yeah? XD

All parents are going to make mistakes. Prevention of frequent mistakes comes from knowing about and using their available resources.

Amy from the ASLIE department has cochlear implants and she loves them. She is a wonderful interpreter as well.

I'm curious if there is not some pamplet of options they can give new parents of deaf children.

Info at a doctor's office typically only relates to c-implants.

This was the case with one of my good friends.

They didn't recommend any outside information sources?

They were told not to allow their child to sign AT ALL & implant them ASAP.

Good grief.

Nope. Nothing. This was also the first deaf child in the family. They did not know they had other options

Thats really true. My niece is almost 2 and she has learned a lot of signs as well as words. She picks it up so easily!

The doctors only said to implant.

Yes, I taught mine some basic signlanguage too. It has helped her develop other language skills as well.

I think it also depends on the area and location of the doctor's offices. Different regions are more acceptable for options.
That's sad, E.

By 18 months babies can sign 118 signs and only say about 50 words.

It has really helped her be more visually aware and able to communicate when she can't say the word what she wants.

Give asl, give life? Hmmmm.....

that clip was "Why ASL" By Justin Jefferson (I think)

Nicolette, you're right. It can depend on the region.

Have to look it up again later. Thanks for posting the name.

They say children can learn the most in the first 5 years of life.

Exposed to a visual language to be able to have linguistic foundations of "babbling" and "motherese"

As well as "how do I communicate with my child?"

I can say that the children I worked with in WA did better when they had a stronger grasp and understanding of ASL

when I say better I mean in english, reading and writing

I know a lot of deaf people who love reading and use asl to communicate.

I don't know that I see language as a form of treatment

I agree, Cheyenne

Any language as an infant is better than none. That child used the given language and has benefited! That's great

touche cheyenne

It's a curious thought, true.

Treatment is when someone is being helped with a so called "problem".

treatment- the manner in which someone behaves toward or deals with someone or something

Interesting

It has two meanings... The second is the medical care given to a patient for an illness or injury. I think that this is the one we assume.

But the first one relates to tonight.

this is very true Nicolette.

I don't put a negative connotation with treatment but I think now we're construing it as a negative

Treatment could be as simple as working to better something.

It's a form of communication..

Do you think it's perhaps the "general consensus" of the majority of people that the word is negative?
Good point
neville

So the question becomes "How can we change the general consensus"? Does academia change things?

Grassroots?

Personal action?

Amen

Do we react to each word, or just one?

As I mentioned earlier when I clarified this when Miranda asked . . . you can respond to only one or choose as many as you wish.

You will choose ONE envelope in which you will place your sheet of paper.

If people see being D/deaf as a limitation then what could be considered limitations to being hearing?

How has anything in history ever changed?

"history tends to repeat itself"... so... it hasn't.

If a child has no language . . . what is the response?

I think the response is to help the child some how acquire language whether it be through hearing aids, speech therapy, signing, etc.

oh yea!!!!!!!

Wouldn't the response be to try and give them a way to communicate? In whatever way they connect with best, either words, sounds, or signs

"ah now what do i do"

Now I'm wondering how much that other test costs...

Who is to judge another person's choice? Are we not all guilty of making wrong choices at some point in our lives.

time to assasinate this dude, really?

blindness can separate people from people too...you just may not be able to see it.

Not liking that quote. Exactly, can argue either way and still be wrong.

I agree with you. I would argue that the ability to see gives you more and better perspective than sound would

I think the lack of communication will separate people from people. I believe blind people and deaf people both have ways to communicate.

I agree with that too.. communication helps build relationships

what was the name of that TedTalk so I can watch the full video?

I agree with that too. But it also seems that deaf people are more independent than blind. It seems that those who are blind are much more d

Foundation of Sound... for later.

Thanks

Dependent on others for transportation and you don't see Braille widely used in everyday situations, so that would be a handicap to them as

I know a deaf-blind woman who lives independently. - Her only complaint is the bus schedule.

Actually, I think it depends on how you look at each. There is a blind man in my hometown who is very successful, he teaches college...

Deaf blind retreat soon! april and august

courses & is an ordained minister at a church. He's very well known but there is a Deaf family who very little people know but they are..

connected to people in the community through different ways and are also successful

april 12-14 and aug 24-31 Deaf blind retreat dates. check with janet noel in the ASL studio 2nd floor :)

I think the quote carries more weight because of how famous she is. And that can add weight to stigmas when famous people say something.

thank you

It's really interesting when there is a language barrier in someone's home where there are equal groups of language users.

Then you have to meet halfway, and there isn't a language power complex

You find your own ways to deal with the situation at hand as far as being deaf, blind, or having a different disability.

my brother-in-law (Deaf) is going on a mission trip with a group of hearing people to Uganda in 2 weeks andgoing back to Africa this summer.

I met a guy who grew up in a home where his father spoke French & English, his mother English and German, his grandmother Italian and French

He didn't start talking until he was 3... I imagine confusion.

I love her personal stories!
