Not hearing loss, deaf gain

For those that don't watch "Switched at Birth" this is a clip that has started circulating around.

Next week they are doing something that no TV series has done thus far, they'll be airing an episode sole in ASL. Obviously it will be captioned for hearing viewers. While "Switched at Birth" can be a controversial program throughout the Deaf community, it gives a watered down version to hearing individuals. I have several Deaf friends who support it and other Deaf friends who can't stand it.

From my understanding the episode they'll be airing will be packed with (obviously watered down) Deaf political type issues.. For those who have never seen it before, next week it should be worth tuning into :)

  1. I loved that clip. I don't watch "Switched at Birth" but I've heard comments from a lot of people that like it. It is much more empowering to same "Deaf gain" opposed to "hearing loss". Thank you for posting :)

  2. I think that it is great that they included this is the show. It is a show that can reach the mainstream community, and it takes the negative connotation (like we discussed in class) and turns into what it really is--whether that may be neutral for some or positive-- it still challenges those who have a negative attitude about Deafness.

  3. That clip has a very good message. I liked the phrase, "hearing loss, deaf gain". I like how this show is accessible to many different groups of people since it uses basic ASL, speaking, and some captioning. I get excited when I am able to tell what is being signed by the characters, without reading the captions. Also, I'm looking forward to next weeks no voice, all ASL episode. I think it will be really interesting and a good learning experience for those who are interested in ASL or even those who have very little/if any knowledge of ASL.

  5. I just watched that clip and honestly I really liked it. I've seen parts of the show before and heard positive and negative feelings from people I know in the deaf community. Something I think is interesting is how the show seems to try and "teach" things about the deaf culture to hearing people across the country. This clip reminded me of the "My Son is Finally Deaf" video, but as a much less extreme way of showing it. Though I don't watch the show, because it's become too dramatic for me, I really like how ABC Family has started this show for a different culture and puts a huge positive spin on being deaf.
